I have just recently joined. I am from High River, Ab and there is no yoga studios here
in our small little town. I am throughly enjoying the selection of videos and your web page.
I am very pleasesd.

I have my whole life had very bad problems with allergys and coughs.
I have tried elemining foods and taking lots of vitamins.
And I am very careful with the items am allergic toas well.

I have been practicing yoga for about a year now and I find it is helping.
I still have problems breathing through my nose. I have been using a neti pot for the
last two months and I have to say it has helped a lot. But especially at night I still
have problems with breathing and wake up a lot coughing and gasping for air.

What asanas should I be doing? An sugestions is greatly apperciated.

Welcome Colette!

We’re pleased you’re pleased with the site. Thanks for joining.
I’m impressed that you’ve been using a neti pot. Glad you are getting some relief through this
ancient Kriya cleansing technique.

What’s really interesting to me is that -- before I read your posting -- I was talking with an organic farmer/educator friend of mine
who told me about his friend, Peter, who has suffered horrible allergies. Peter, a med student from Germany, also makes Keifer cheese
and Kombucha. After drinking Kombucha tea (also known as Manchurian tea) for awhile, he noticed complete relief from his allergies.
This was a wonderful surprise by-product because he just hoped it would boost his immune system. He also lost 60 lbs. in the process.
(NO – I’m not trying to sell this product!)

But, if by chance this is sparks interest for you, please do some on-line research on this ancient fermented stuff. The tea is widely available
and easy to make, as you may know – just BE SURE it comes from a conscientious place of production. Also, be sure your liver can handle
it because it is a powerful detoxifier. (DO NOT even consider if you are pregnant!)

Asanas and pranayama greatly assist when one’s focus is on wholistic healing. I realize it’s a Catch 22 -- when the nose is running
or stopped up, breathing is difficult and coughing persists -- yoga practice can feel miserable instead of wonderful.
Allergens create stress. Stress weakens the immune system. Yoga relieves stress. Deeper breathing improves the use of oxygen in
the blood. Ultimately, we want allergens to take a back-row seat and finally “leave the theater,” so to speak.

Colette, I don’t know enough about your physical-being to recommend specific asanas. Best that you continue exploring
and experiencing the variety of beginning-intermediate levels and styles offered here. Trust that if, for instance, you go into
an inversion and can hardly breathe – don’t go there! Go to those yoga styles and postures that give you the greatest
sense of peace, calm, security and joy.

You may also want to include Alternate-Nostril Breathing into your daily practice. This systematic pranayama technique could
greatly improve your body’s ability to cope with the allergies. Do this when your nostrils are not plugged-up, otherwise, it will be too frustrating! Remember that you are gradually re-training your body and mind through each practice.

Let me ask you this - - what asanas have you been practicing and enjoying so far? Have you found a yoga style you prefer?
Are you drinking water with honey and fresh lemon squeezed in for your throat?!

Namaste,

Hello Jeneveve Satya,

Thank you for your suggestions. I tried Alternate-Nostril Breathing last night after using my neit pot
and it helped my breathing greatly. It has been added to my daily routine.

I have been doing just basic asanas. My favorite asanas so far are Dancer's Pose, Tree Pose, Cat Pose,
Downward Facing Dog Pose, Sun Salutations and Childs Pose. I find doing poses that require me to lie
down very difficult I can't seem to be able to breath as smoothly lying down.

You asked me what style I prefer, I believe I would have to say Hatha Yoga.

I do drink a warm water with honey and fresh lemon during the winter months when its cold and dry.

Namaste,

Colette

Hi. Do you drink or eat many dairy products?

I have allergic asthma, and I find that by eliminating dairy from my diet, I can breathe freely without coughing and I don't need any medication.

If you eliminate dairy, though, you would have to replace the calcium in your diet by eating other foods.

I don't drink or eat a lot of dairy products. The most I have is milk in my cup coffee in the morning.
And yogurt ocasionally. I stay away from all the rich creamy stuff.

I've cut down my sugar intake to hardly any food with sugar in it and that has helped my breathing a lot.
When I started looking at food labels sugar is in everything!

I am finding I can do more of the lying down poses and I am starting to be able to yoga longer periods of time.

Namaste,
Colette
