I am just learning yoga from a book and don't understand Breathing. They say when lifting to breath in and when bending to breath out. Some of these poses ask to hold for 30 seconds. Am I supposed to be breathing in and out while holding the pose or actually holding my breath for this duration? Please any help would be appreciated.

Thanks,
Yoga Rookie

Hello “Yoga Rookie!”

Please continue to breathe while holding the poses. There will come a time when you will
explore “pausing” or gently holding the breath – but for now, BREATHE!
Doesn’t it feel wonderful when you breath in, you feel stronger and more uplifted. When you breath out, you relax and soften. Each posture -- and transitions into postures -- offer new insights every time we “practice.”

Pranayama teaches us to focus on these patterns of our breath. Notice, as you move into
a posture, how your inhalations and exhalations change. Our challenge is to recognize “choppy,” “fragmented” or “uneven” breath. Then, we consciously begin to regulate (or smooth out) the stream of our in-breaths and out-breaths. Essentially, our intent is to feed EVERY cellular membrane in our system with continually expanded, conscious breath and prana.

Once you learn and experience diaphragmatic, thoracic, deep abdominal and paradoxical breathing techniques – the richer, deeper and more fulfilling your growing yoga practice will become.
