From the Inside Out

By Susan Winter Ward

What is the legacy we are leaving for our children? What kind of a world will they inherit? What are the priorities in our cities and in our country? We and our children are facing a world of unprecedented challenges; challenges to our environment, to our social structure, to our economic structure and to ourselves. How do we live with structures that are fragmenting and crumbling all around us? These institutions don't exist or destruct by accident. They're the result of collections of thoughts and projections by people. "People" are you and me.

We can begin to practice where our experience of life begins: inside of each of us. The new systems and structures that are being birthed on our planet are the result of our thoughts, projections and expectations. What do we want them to look like? We can create a new paradigm together, consciously, by each of us beginning inside ourselves. What we experience on the outside is a direct reflection of what we choose to project from the inside. The social and economic systems, the environmental crisis, and the fabric of our society are a result of personal decisions and projections, both positive and negative, by each of us and by all of us. We always have a choice. Will we make the choice to come from love, nurturing and honoring of all life?

By choosing to come from a place of stillness and peace within, we each contribute to the creation of a healthy, peaceful and nurturing planet. We can choose to replace the old systems with new ones that protect, heal and respect ourselves, our cities and our Earth. We can come into harmony within, and with our Earth.

Yoga is an ageless pathway to personal health and awareness of our own place of inner harmony and balance. A consistent yoga practice can create miracles of healing of our bodies and minds. By creating an internal microcosm of peace, balance and stillness, we're able to create that same energy around us in the macrocosm. When we're healthy and guided from a place of inner stillness, we're more relaxed. When we're more relaxed, we're more open. When we're more open, we're more loving. When we're more loving, we're more peaceful. When we're more peaceful, we bring peace to the world. One yoga class at a time and one choice at a time, we can heal ourselves and heal our world.
